What is Electrical Engineering N1-N6?  Register Now!

The field of Electrical Engineering is divided into two parts, heavy current and light current. Both of these fields of electrical engineering are very important and have a lot of job opportunities for those who have completed the course. To obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering you need to complete N4-N6 subjects under Heavy current or Light current. If however you do not have any background of engineering subjects you need to start from N1-N6. We will discuss more of these later.

Electrical Engineering Heavy current N1-N6

Heavy current electrical engineering as the name states is concerned with supply, distribution, transformation and use of electrical power. As a result of being heavy current, work in this area is characterised by high voltage power systems. To learn more about high voltages and the work involved in high voltages you can read more on Wikipedia. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_voltage).

Electrical Engineering Light current N1-N6

Light current electric engineering is also referred to as electronical engineering or electronics. This field of engineering is concerned with the use of low power electrical systems. The work in this area is characterised by designing, manufacturing and installing components used in telecommunication, navigation, data processing and process control. Coupled with this is the managing of systems, equipment and components used in the areas mentioned above.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_voltage

Careers in Electrical Engineering

There are lots and lots of careers in electrical engineering. Electrical engineers are needed in almost every possible field as electricity is the basic component of every manufacturing process. Electrical Engineers’ jobs include designing, manufacturing, installation and management of various appliances and systems that generate or use electrical energy such as substations, ventilation systems and pumps.  They are involved in power generation, power transmission and power distribution.

N3 Electrical Engineering Certificate

A certificate in N3 electrical engineering is obtained by studying electrical engineering subjects. In N3 electrical engineering, you obtain the foundation and fundamentals important for one to be able to do higher studies in for a diploma in electrical engineering i.e. from N4-N6. Electrical Engineering subjects are listed below. These subjects are for electrical engineering in N1 to N3.

For electrical engineering N3 subjects under heavy current the subjects include:
  • Mathematics N1 to N3
  • Engineering Science N1to N3
  • Industrial Electronics N1 to N3
  • Electrical Trade Theory N1 to N3
  • Refrigeration N1 to N3

The minimum requirement is to pass four subjects in each phase. To obtain an N3 electrical engineering certificate under heavy current one needs to pass any four of the above subjects.

For electrical engineering N3 subjects under light current, the subjects include:
  • Mathematics N1 to N3
  • Engineering Science N1 to N3
  • Industrial Electronics N1 to N3
  • Instrument Trade Theory N2 to N3
  • Radio and TV Theory N1 to N3
  • Logic System N2 to N3

The minimum requirement is to pass four subjects in each phase. To obtain an N3 electrical engineering certificate under light current one needs to pass any four of the above subjects.

NB: Mathematics N3 and Engineering Science are compulsory subjects in order to obtain a N3 certificate under electrical engineering. In as much as Maths N3 and Engineering Science N3 are challenging, studying it with us ensures that you get video material for these subjects are well as past exam papers for the electrical engineering course. With N1 to N3 electrical engineering past exam papers with their memos, passing becomes even easier. Register and study electrical engineering with us and obtain N3 certificate.

Electrical Engineering diploma

Electrical Engineering N6 is equivalent to a diploma in electrical engineering. In order to obtain a diploma in electrical engineering you need to pass N4 to N6 engineering subjects as well as have a practical experience of one and a half years in a related field.

Electrical Engineering Diploma in Light Current

The minimum requirement for a diploma in electrical engineering is to pass four subjects in each phase from N4-N6. To obtain an N6 electrical engineering certificate under heavy current one needs to pass any four of the subjects below.

  • Mathematics N4 to N6
  • Engineering Science N4 to N6
  • Industrial Electronics N4 to N6
  • Electrotechnics N4 to N6
  • Digital Electronics N4 to N6
  • Fault Finding N4 to N6
  • Supervisory Management N4 to N6
Electrical Engineering Diploma in Heavy Current

To obtain an N6 electrical engineering certificate under light current one needs to pass any four of the subjects below.

  • Mathematics N4 to N6
  • Engineering Science N4 to N6
  • Industrial Electronics N4 to N6
  • Digital Electronics N4 to N6
  • Supervisory Management N4 to N6
  • Communication Electronics N4 to N6
  • Industrial Instruments N4 to N6

Electrical Engineering Past Exam Papers Download Papers

Studying electrical engineering and having past exam papers is a big advantage if you want to ace your electrical engineering exams. At Ekurhuleni Tech College we have electrical engineering past exam papers and their memos for each subject mentioned above. These are provided FREE for our students but are also sold to anyone who wants them per subject.

Duration for electrical engineering course online

Duration of the studies depends on an individual, and in each phase there is a certificate. For example if you have no background of engineering courses you can start from N1. In N1 engineering you need to pass four subjects to obtain your N1 certificate. This is the same with N2 to N6. The exam times for these subjects are offered three times in a year-April, July and November. Hence in each term you can choose to do any number of subjects you want when four subjects are completed in a phase these are then combined.
